Lubricant guide for intimate-wellness products — water-based vs silicone-based in the UAE

The silicone-on-silicone rule

This is the single most important rule in lube compatibility. Silicone-based lubricant chemically bonds with silicone toys. The result is a permanent, sticky, rough surface — no amount of cleaning reverses it. You've ruined the toy.

This applies to all real silicone — medical-grade, platinum-cured, every category and price point. If your toy is silicone (and most modern toys are), water-based or hybrid lube only.

Why? Both products are silicone polymers. Free silicone in the lube has small molecules that interpenetrate the cured silicone of the toy, swelling and roughening the surface. Once it happens, it can't be undone.

Water-based lube — the safe default

Water-based lube is exactly what it sounds like: water as the base, plus a thickener (glycerin, cellulose, or a synthetic polymer), plus minor ingredients for pH balance and preservation.

Pros:

• Compatible with every material we sell — silicone, TPE, ABS, glass, metal, latex condoms
• Easy cleanup — washes off with water
• Body-friendly — non-irritating for most users when the formula is pH-balanced (look for "pH 4.0–4.5" for vaginal use, "pH 6.0–6.5" for anal)
• Available everywhere in the UAE — drugstores stock several brands

Cons:

• Dries out faster than silicone — may need reapplication during longer sessions
• Not waterproof — washes off in showers, baths, pool play
• Some formulas contain glycerin, which can feed yeast infections in sensitive users — look for glycerin-free options if you're prone

For most users with most toys: water-based is the right default.

Silicone-based lube — when to use it

Silicone-based lubricant is the longest-lasting type. A small amount lasts the entire session and doesn't dry out. It's also fully waterproof, so it stays slippery in showers and pools.

Compatibility:

• ✅ ABS plastic (vibrator shells, pumps, rings)
• ✅ Glass
• ✅ Stainless steel
• ✅ Latex condoms (but not with silicone toys underneath the condom)
• ❌ Silicone toys — never
• ❌ TPE — degrades faster than even silicone

The cleanup is harder — you need soap and warm water, plain water doesn't cut it. On fabric (sheets), silicone lube can leave a stain if not blotted quickly.

Hybrid lubricant

Hybrid lube is mostly water-based with a small amount of silicone microemulsion. The idea is "the long-lasting feel of silicone with the toy-safety of water-based". The reality is that most hybrid brands are toy-safe with silicone, but a few are not.

Practical rule: check the bottle label or brand website for explicit silicone-toy-safe claim. Reputable brands state it. If it's not stated, don't risk it on an expensive silicone toy.

What to avoid

• Oil-based "natural" lubes (coconut oil, baby oil): degrade latex condoms; can disrupt vaginal pH; some oils degrade silicone over time. Not recommended for intimate use even though they're often marketed as wholesome.
• Lubes with parabens, glycerin, or strong fragrances if you have skin sensitivity. Read the label.
• Saliva: not actually a lubricant; introduces bacteria; tasted-condom-effect during oral isn't sufficient for intimate use.
• "Numbing" or "warming" lubes on a first purchase. They contain anaesthetics or chili-extract that mask discomfort that exists for a reason. Start without additives.

What's available in the UAE

UAE drugstores (Boots, Life, Aster, BinSina) carry mainstream water-based brands — Durex Play, K-Y Jelly, Sliquid. These are fine for most starter use.

Silicone-based and specialty brands (Pjur, Uberlube, System JO) are harder to find locally. Some are available through Noir's catalogue or by request — message us on WhatsApp if you have a specific brand in mind.
